Collection: At the Threshold 2025
Democracy is precarious. Amid fragile political leadership, persistent wars, global pandemic trauma, and escalating climate change, our understanding of democratic freedom and social justice faces profound tests. At the Threshold captures this critical moment, blending hope for renewal with the unease of an uncertain future.
This collaborative print exchange brings together 12 South African artists from Artists Proof Studio in Johannesburg and 12 U.S. artists from the Los Angeles Printmakers Society. Through dialogue and shared ideas, these artists offer deeply personal interpretations of democracy and freedom, revealing how these ideals differ yet resonate universally across borders.
The resulting portfolio of 24 prints for 2024 reflects the complexities of a year when both South Africa and the United States held elections. The theme of being "at the threshold" highlights the fragile balance between hope and uncertainty, a reality extending into 2025 and beyond.
Debuting in Johannesburg, At the Threshold now appears at SPARC's Durón Gallery, a space renowned for amplifying underrepresented voices and fostering dialogue on democracy and justice. This exhibition testifies to art's power to bridge divides, challenge perspectives, and inspire unity, inviting reflection on the shared challenges and aspirations of two nations at a pivotal historical moment.
