Farmworkers' Movement

Philip Vera Cruz and Larry Itliong, leaders of the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) in Delano, a predominantly Filipino organization, launched the farmworker movement by organizing a grape strike in 1965. They invited collaboration with the primarily Mexican National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) led by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, also pictured here. A year into the joint strike, the two organizations merged into the United Farm Workers of America (UFW)—"Si, se puede!"—America's longest enduring farmworkers union.

Boxer and poet Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzalez appears with a banner reading "Yo Soy Joaquin," the title of his poem that spoke to Chicana/os and Mexican American political activists. In the background, a flying calavera references how farm bosses blanketed deadly pesticides over the fields, while a billboard calls attention to "Valley Fever," highlighting the environmental and health risks farmworkers faced in their fight for better working conditions. Farmworkers perform as part of El Teatro Campesino, founded on the Delano grape strike picket lines by Luis Valdez, giving voice to the struggles of farmworkers.

Proceeds support the Great Wall of Los Angeles expansion and SPARC.
