A crewneck sweatshirt featuring the East L.A. Student Walkouts section from the Great Wall of Los Angeles 1960s expansion, created by artist Judith F. Baca and the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC).
The design depicts the historic March 1968 walkouts when 15,000 students from Garfield, Roosevelt, Lincoln, Belmont, and Wilson High Schools left their classrooms to demand better education. The movement spread beyond East L.A. to Jefferson High School in South L.A. and Venice High School, becoming one of the largest student protests in American history. With support from the United Mexican American Students (UMAS) and the Brown Berets, a Chicano rights organization, the youth presented 36 demands including smaller class sizes, more Latinx teachers and administrators, bilingual education, improved facilities, quality textbooks, the inclusion of Mexican American history, and the removal of racist teachers. Their courage and organization sparked lasting educational reform and inspired generations of student activism.
Your purchase supports the ongoing development of the Great Wall of Los Angeles and the work of SPARC.
