A handprinted t-shirt featuring "Why Alcatraz Matters," the opening section of the 1970s segment from the Great Wall of Los Angeles mural expansion, created by artist Judith F. Baca and the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC).

This design depicts the historic 1969 occupation of Alcatraz Island, regarded as the origin of modern Native American resistance. When "Indians of All Tribes" reclaimed the decommissioned prison and proclaimed it a cultural and spiritual center for all indigenous peoples, the occupation lasted 19 months and drew 10,000-15,000 participants at its peak. Despite the U.S. government cutting off water and power, the occupation became a defining moment in indigenous rights movements.

The mural panel connects this pivotal act of resistance to contemporary land back movements, including the struggle against the Dakota Access Pipeline, showing how Alcatraz continues to inspire indigenous sovereignty today.

Each shirt is screen printed by hand in Venice by local craftspeople, making every piece unique.

Your purchase supports the ongoing development of the Great Wall of Los Angeles and the work of SPARC.
