Non-Violent Resistance

Reverend James Lawson looks on as his principles of nonviolent direct action are etched onto a blackboard beneath the silhouette of Mahatma Gandhi, who guided his own work. Lawson trained a generation of civil rights activists in non-violent resistance. His leadership and training of social justice activists and civil rights leaders were key to social change at the national level.

In 1974, Lawson moved to Los Angeles, becoming pastor of Holman United Methodist Church and a UCLA professor of labor studies. Rev. Lawson helped shape Los Angeles's movements for civil rights, peace, labor, and immigrant rights, making a direct and lasting impact on the city.

Proceeds support the Great Wall of Los Angeles expansion and SPARC.
